FIRST           SEMESTER

TUR 101  Writing techniques (1-2) 2

Notion of writing, techniques and methods of writing, basic capital and small letters slanting forward and backward capital letters. Numbers and figures and creating texts as such. Various decorative, antique writing. Practice writing neat and readable texts

TUR 103 Turkish Grammar I : Phonology (2-0) 2

Historical development of Turkish and its area of expansion.  Family of Turkic languages. Phonological features of Turkish spoken in Turkey. Vocals, consonants and their characteristics, vowel harmony. Voiced and unvoiced consonants.  Resulting phonological changes. Basics of writing:  Turkish alphabets throughout history, importance of writing and its necessity. phonics, syllabification.  Practice writing.

TUR 103 Turkish Grammar I : Phonology (2-0) 2

Literary notions and their relationships. Comparison of elements determining prose and poetic genres. Subjects, events that affect literature and their consequences.    Systematic literary techniques and theories of literature

TUR 107 Written Expression I (2-0) 2

Basics of written communication. Major differences between written and oral language. Expression: oral and written, subjective versus objective expression. Paragraph types. Definition of text types and conditions. Structured writing and outlining. Cohesion and coherence.  Practice writing.   Précis writing. Correcting linguistic and expression errors. 

TUR 109 Oral Expression I  (2-0) 2  

Basic features of verbal language and verbal communication. Verbal narration; basic features speaking arability (using natural language and bady language); basic principals of a good speech; basic features of a good speaker (stress, tone, pause, diction, etc.). Prepared and unprepared speech; steps in prepared speech (the selection and restriction of the topic; the determination of the purpose, point of view and main and secondary opinions; planning, writing the text, the presentation of the speech). Types of speech I: (Dialogues, reportage, presentation, replying questions, celebrating and an important event such as Christmas, birthday, felicitation act.) giving directions, talking on the phone, asking for a job, interviewing, radio and TV speeches, attending as a speaker to different culture and are programs, etc.). Making an unprepared speech on different subjects, exercises and samples of speech and verbal narration practises, correcting the language and narration errors in the speeches.

 EGT 103  Introduction to Educational Science (3-0) 3

Fundamental concepts of education, the relationships between education and other sciences (educational philosophy, social, legal, psychological, economical, and political foundations), historical development of educational science, tendencies of educational science in 21. century, research methods in educational sciences, the structure and properties of Turkish National Educational System, the role of teacher in educational system, properties of teacher occupation, applications and development in teacher training programs. 

GKD 109 Foreign Language I (3-0) 3

This course is designed for undergraduates to learn a foreign language in order to make use of the skills of reading, listening and writing in their own academic Studies. The objective of the course is to improve students’ foreign language skills and competences by creating interesting and communication and learning contexts.  

 

SECOND SEMESTER

TUR 104 Turkish Grammar II :  morphology  (2-0) 2

Structural features of Turkish,  loan words, etymological features. Simple nouns, compound nouns. According to types: nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, verbs, prepositions, conjunctions, gerunds and deriving vocabulary. Turkish affixes: derivational and inflectional, gerund, voice, Stress  patterns,  analysis of vocabulary : prefix, infix, suffix. Dealing with spelling errors.

Basics of writing: writing of certain words and affixes

Knowing basics: loan words, capital and small letters, writing numbers and Roman letters, spelling of days of the week and months. Spelling of compound words, idioms and proverbs. Practice writing.

TUR 106 Literary Knowledge and Theories II  (2-0) 2

Phases from the beginning to the present time, literary genres, poetic forms,  meter and  rhymes , understanding art of literature.

TUR 108 Written expressions II (3-0-3)

Ways of written expression and theoretical work, (defining, exemplifying comparing, referencing, quota ting, making use of statistics) Styles, (expository, argumentative, narration, and story telling). Informative texts (essays, chatting, critical writing, diary etc.)  Studying samples of written works.  Correcting errors in written work.

TUR 112 Verbal Narration II (3-0) 3

Text reading techniques (reading aloud, silent reading, controlled reading, critical reading); verbal narration of texts  that are read and events, films, theatre opals, etc. That is watched (summarizing, evaulation and interpretation). Types of speech II: (speaking in front of a group, narrating an event or a memory, conveying an announcement, narrating a story, game or a film; lecturing, giving a conference, speech, etc. Speeches made in meetings with discussions: discussion, debate, panel discussion, panel, forum, symposium, congress, seminar, etc.) Types of narration that can be used in speech argumentation, explanatory, description and narrative), exercises on samples of speech, making a prepared speech on different subjects; correcting the language and narration errors in the speeches.

 

TUR 110 Ottoman Turkish II (2-0) 2

Linguistic and writing features of Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian words, kinds of phrases.

 GKD 108 Atatürk Principles and Revolution History II (3-0) 3

The revolutions in political area, political parties and attempts to transition for multi-parties political life, the revolution in legal area, regulation of social life, reforms in economy, Turkish foreign policy between 1923-1938, Turkish foreign policy after Attar, The Principles of Turkish Revolution: (Republicanism, Populism, Secularism, Reformism, Nationalism, States). Integral principles. 

GKD 110 Foreign Language II (3-0) 3

This course is planned to have college students use their abilities on speaking, listening, and writing within the activities that require for the academic work in their fields. In this course, it is aimed to move the students’ knowledge and skills acquired form “Foreign Language 1” course to a next level. Students’ linguistic and communicative skills and their foreign proficiencies will be developed by interesting contexts, giving exercises that promote the functionality of the language, demonstrating the use of language in real communication skills.

EGT 104 Educational Psychology (3-0) 3

Education-Psychology relation, definition of educational psychology and its manner, fundamental concepts related to learning and development, features of development (physical, cognitive, emotional, social and ethical developments), the factors affecting learning, learning theories, the reflections of learning theories to the teaching processes, effective learning, the factors affecting learning (motivation, individual factors, group dynamic, and the effects of these factors on classroom teaching processes).

TUR 201 Turkish Grammar III : Vocabulary (2-0) 2

Studying Vocabulary: nouns, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, verbs and related applications. Prepositions, conjunctions and interjections.

TUR 203  Turkish Folk Literature I (2-0) 2

Studies directed at determining the notion of folk literature.  Before and after Islam Turkish epics, tales, stories, myths, folk stories and poems.  To know the branches of folk literature.  Text analysis.  Selecting texts appropriate for primary education.

TUR 205  Old Turkish literature I (2-0) 2

Analysis of selected texts from 15.16.century Turkish literature.   Understanding the     Language works of the era, social conditions and viewing world.  Basics of Divan Literature, major genres. Important representatives.

TUR 207  Modern Turkish Literature I (2-0) 2

Studying works to know first and second Tania period.

Analysing selected texts from this era and works to know the features of the era. Identifying the artists moving from their Works.  Served I Fanon and Fermi Ate era prominent figures and social phenomena. Analysing typical texts and their applications in teaching Turkish.

GKD 201 Scientific Research Methods (2-0) 2

Science and fundamental concepts (fact, knowledge, absolute, right, wrong, universal knowledge etc...), fundamental knowledge in relation to history of science, scientific methods and different ideas for these methods, problem, research model, population and sampling, data collection and data collection methods (quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques), data recording, analysis, interpretation and report. 

GKD 203 ICT (Information and Communication Technologies I (2-2) 3

Information Technologies, basic concepts of software and hardware, operating systems in general, word-processing programmes, worksheet programmes, data presentation, the use of the Internet in education, the influences of It on social structure and their place in education, ethical concepts and issues  in IT safety.

FOURTH SEMESTER

TUR 202  Turkish Grammar IV:  sentence structure (3-0) 3

Syntax, general features and principles of Turkish spoken in Turkey.  Phrases, sentence, parts of sentence types and analysis.

TUR 204 Turkish Folk Literature II (2-0) 2

Knowing foremost representatives and examples of folk literature, basics of local usage, and aspects of local usage.  Assessing folk poetry and stories from an educational viewpoint and for different levels in primary education.

TUR 206  Old Turkish literature II (2-0) 2

Analysing selected texts from 17.18.century Turkish literature.  Basics of Arum metre and problems faced.   Applications of Arum Literature in order to teach its melody. Method development in using Arum in teaching Turkish and literature.

TUR 208  Modern Turkish Literature II (2-0) 2

Movements of Thought in National Literature, and the resulting literary directions by providing at least one text.  Introducing man of literature of the era. The effects of 20. century era on Turkish literature . Developments in Republic era until 1950s. Studying Prose, poetry and theatre.

 

TUR 210 General Linguistics (3-0) 3

Concept of linguistics and basic concepts of linguistics. Saucier and structionalism, Europe (Prague Language School) and American Structionalism, verbalism theories, introduction of various domains related to language examining such as index science. Studying important scholars (Martinet, Harris, Bloomfield, Themselves, Chomsky...) who led the way to linguistics studies. Study of performance solutions to language use with descript ional dimension.

GKD 202 ICT II (2-2) 3        

Basic concepts of CAL (Computer assisted learning), its components and theoretical foundations, its advantages and limitations, methods of practicing CAL, main ways of using CAL in schools, selection and assessment of educational software, database applications, distance learning activities, negative affects of computer and the internet on children and adolescents and ways of preventing these affects. 

GKD 204 Effective communication     (3-0) 3

The definition of communication  between people, communication model, the elements and features of communication, effective listening and feedback, factors preventing communication between people (source, canal, receiver…), factors facilitating communication, the role and usage of feelings I communication, dispute in communication and prevention of it, significant factors to be considered in student, teacher, protector communication, communication applications.

EGT 206  Teaching Technologies and Material Design (2-2) 3

Concepts related to teaching technology, the features of varied teaching technologies, the place and usage of teaching technologies in teaching process, determination of technologic needs of school and classroom, appropriate technology planning and performing, two and three dimensional material development by means of teaching technologies, developing teaching tools (work sheets, activity planning, papers for overhead, slides, visual media (VCD, DVD) materials, computer supported tools), examination of educational software, evaluation of teaching tools in varied quality, internet and distant education, visual design principles, investigation on  teaching materials  regarding activities, the use of teaching technologies in Turkey and in the world

 

FIFTH SEMESTER

TUR 301 Comprehension Techniques I: Reading Education (2-2) 3 (ECTS : 5 )                                   

The explanation of reading skill theoretically with its theoretical dimensions. The things that are to be done for the reading habit to be common in the society, and the examination of techniques towards reading skill. Types of reading and the selection of reading type in accordance with the purpose. Exercises to improve reading skill in Turkish education showing examples of “critical reading” concept through texts, doing critical reading tidies and exercises. 

TUR 303 Comprehension Techniques II: Listening Education (2-2) 3 (ECTS : 5 )

Doing exercises improving listening skill. Specifying the validity and the usefulness periods of listening activity making use of psychological investigations; the determination of attention periods; attracting the attention to the memorizing and comprehension activities. Giving examples of general listening comprehension and selective listening-comprehension exercises using various phonetic and visual communication tools. Showing and introducing various listening-comprehension exercises to the candidate teacher’s fort hem to use these in Turkish lessons, and assuring possibilities fort hem to be able to develop such kind of exercises by themselves. Realizing various listening exercises in the class.

TUR 305 Children’s Literature (2-0) 2

Development of child literature both in the world and Turkey. The importance of encountering good quality books during childhood and the tasks of child literature Works to bring up sensitive and thoughtful individuals who develop reading habit. Examining of features in sample books bound to be found in the child literature. (Design, content, educational). Presenting bad quality books with samples and discussion of how these books negatively affect child development. Categorizing of the books read and assessed by the teacher candidates according to children’s age group to see if appropriate and studies to determine what benefits children can get over these books. Determining the benefits of written genres (legends, tales, poems, narrations, novels,) and verbal activities (making a count game, tongue twister, puzzle…)

TUR 307 World Literature (3-0) 3

Reading and examining the books well known and diligently translated from the world literature. Examining of a selected work from the world literature to understand contemporary literature without memorizing or traditional summing up or character analysis or illustration sense. Critical reading practises using the hints gained in “Learn to Read” lesson.

GKD 303 Applied Social Work (1-2) 2 

The importance of Applied Social Work, identification of actual problems of society and preparing project to solve those problems, attending some scientific activities like panels, conferences, and symposiums as audience, speaker or organizer, voluntarily taking parts in various social projects, acquiring fundamental knowledge and skills to practice social work applications in schools. 

EGT 303 Special Teaching Methods I (2-2) 3

Basic concepts specific to the domain and the relations of these concepts with the domain teaching, legal basis of the domain initially on the constitution and organic law of national education, general purposes of teaching a domain the method used in it, technical tool-equipments and materials. Examination of related instructional programs (aim, acquirement, theme, unit, activity...) examination and assessment of book samples of the lesson and teacher-students’.

EGT 309 Classroom Management (2-0) 2

Fundamental concepts related to class management, communication and interaction in class, the definition of classroom management, differentiation of the concept of classroom management from providing discipline in classroom, interior and exterior factors affecting class environment, class management methods, developing norms and applications, arranging physical environment of the classroom, management of misbehaviours in class, management of time in class, class organizations, setting up appropriate classroom environment for learning (examples and recommendations)

 

SIXTH SEMESTER

TUR 302 Narration techniques I: Speaking Education (2-2) 3

Explanation of speaking ability theoretically. Describing, interpreting, defending and proving an opinion and examination of its being put through production stage clearly. Speaking organs, diaphragm control. Voice studies. Improving fluent and good speaking ability one specific subject. Introduction of candidate teachers to various speaking exercises for Primary School Turkish lessons and preparation of practice conditions for them to improve their speaking abilities.

TUR 304 Narration techniques II: Writing Education (2-2) 3

Explanation of writing ability theoretically. Making students conscious about the types of written text and making writing practises so that the candidate teachers act being conscious about the fact that they will be both the learner and the teacher.

TUR 306 Teaching Turkish to the Foreigners (2-0) 2

Putting forward the differences between the teaching of Turkish as a native language and as a foreign language clearly. Relating the teaching of Turkish, especially as a foreign language with culture. Theoretical debates during the teaching of other world languages as foreign language, and types of methodological approaches in this field. Theoretical frame in foreign language education. The introduction of European Language File. The contribution of teaching Turkish as a foreign language to the introduction of Turkey. The introduction and criticising of various course books used in the teaching of Turkish as a foreign language.

TUR 308 Special Teacing Methods  II  (2-2-3)

The method, technique, concept, principle, situation and basis of Turkish teaching, its legislation, length of learning, teaching, critically examining and evaluation of teaching methods of Turkish lesson applied at primary schools. Development of listening, reading, speaking, writing skills through activities fitting to the structure of language, transforming of knowledge at language teaching into skills, choice of the texts which will be used in Turkish teaching, text characteristics, preparation and assessment of questions on texts, studying the texts in various angles and making the acquired knowledge more permanent, equipments, kinds and methods of surveying and evaluation, surveying and evaulation at Turkish teaching. Studies of preparing a teaching situation through appropriate texts suitable to the level.

GKD 304 History of Education in Turkey* (2-0) 2  

The importance of history of Turkish education from an educational perspective, the state of education and teacher training institutions before the republican period. Turkish Educational Revolution 1: its historical background, philosophical, intellectual, and political foundations of the Revolution. 2: The Act of Integration and Unification of Educational Institutions: its historical background, scope, application and importance; Secularism in Turkish Educational System. 3: Co-education and education of girls, Writing Revaluation, public schools, public houses, fundamental principles of Turkish Republic’s  educational system. Village Institutions, Institutes of Education and Teacher High Schools. Universities and teacher training. Recent improvements in Turkish education.

Entry, Mesopotamia civilizations, Egyptian civilization, Chinese and Indian civilizations, Anatolia civilizations, Central Asian plain civilizations, Greek and Helena civilization, Roman and Byzantine civilization, Central American civilizations, Islamic civilizations, Western civilizations, explorations and scientific findings.

SEVENTH SEMESTER

TUR 401 Theater and Drama Applications (2-2) 3 (ECTS :6 )

Development of traditional notion of theatre since the time of Aristotle’s. Basic notions in ties field. Dramatization and its techniques. Improvisations. Determining theatrical language.  Dramatization, interpretation and staging. Introducing creativity and ways to utilize them in Turkish education. Game techniques in Turkish education. The notion of play.  Psychological rationale of game and relation between game and education.

TUR 402 Examinations of Turkish Textbooks (2-0) 2 (ECTS: 4)

The place of course  book as one of the most important materials of a lesson. The introduction conditions (laws, regulations, types of school, market conditions, etc.) and internal conditions (methods to be used of the subject field, physical conditions, etc.) which form a course book, and doing applications on this subject. Making use of the experience in the world on the field of course book examination, The function of elements such as language, exercising methods and their varieties which consider testing and strengthen subject completeness, text selection and variety in Turkish lessons, page settings, and the use of graphic elements, and the practical demonstration of them in the course book that are prepared according to different views. Doing the necessary studies for every candidate teacher to be able to comprehend the course book related to his subject field with a multi-dimensional view and writes an evaluation report. For this study, course books with different views which are prepared for different teaching programmes applied from the early years of Republic up to now must be used as sample practises.

GKD 401 Counselling (3-0) 3 (ECTS : 4 )

Basic concepts, student personality services, the place of Psychological Counselling and Guidance among these services, principles and the development of the guidance, kinds of physiological counselling and guidance, services, techniques, organization and personnel, new improvements in the field, techniques of learning about the student, guide-teacher cooperation, guidance duties that the teacher will do.

EGT 423Special Education* (2-0) 2 (ECTS: 4 )

Defining special education, basic principles about special education, the reasons for difficulties, the importance of early diagnosis, historical approach regarding obstacle, characteristics and education of autistic and highly gifted children who are mentally retarded, hearing-impaired, visually-impaired, physically handicapped and children who have language and communication failure, long-lasting illness, indicating special learning problems. Lack of aide, hyperactive decidedness. Education of children who are developing differently through games, reaction observed in the families of children who are needy for private education, the situation of special education  in our country, the institutions and organizations founded for this purpose.

EGT 413 School Experience (1-4) 3

Observing a day of the teacher and a student at school; observing  how a teacher arranges the lesson which stages he/she divides the lesson into, how she/he uses the teaching methods and techniques, what kind of activities she/he makes use of in the lesson, what he does for the lesson management and class control. How he finishes the lesson and how he evaluates the students’ studies, observing the organizational structure of the school, how the school manager does his/her duty and the relationships of the school with the society in which it exists, preparing a portfolio reflecting school experience studies. 

EIGHTH SEMESTER

TUR 402 Language and Culture* (2-0) 2

Concept of culture, fountains of culture, components of culture, civilization concept, the role of culture in determining national consciousness, national personality, national, ID and cultural ID, language as a cultural integral, relations between language and culture. The culture conveying feature of language, the feature of language protecting and developing culture, conveying national and universal virtues through written text, the texts which will convey Turkish culture and assessment of them through critical point of view, Turkish history, relations between Turkish culture and Turkish language from the point of language sociology view, the connection between culture and civilization, relations between civilization and culture and different aspects of these two terms.

EGT 414 Turkish Educaiton System and School Management (2-0) 2

The purpose and fundamental concepts of Turkish education system, legal arrangements about education, the structure of Turkish education system, management theories and their spans, organization and management of school, affairs at school management about staff, student, instruction and administration, social participation at school.

EGT 416 Teaching Practices (2-6) 5

Preparing a daily schedule every week, application of the prepared schedule, the assessment of the practice by the teacher, lecturer and student at school, corrections through assessments and reapplication, preparing portfolio.
