The department of Early Childhood Education trains preschool teachers for the education of children aged 0 – 6 years in early childhood institutions. The department aims to equip teacher candidates with a good self- image, an outgoing personality, a sense of humour and an interest in helping children achieve a positive image of their own. The program provides a professional education, with a strong emphasis on practical experience, and is designed by Turkish Higher Education Association. In the program students will learn to improve and support the physical, intellectual, language, social, emotional and personal skills of children; to assess and evaluate the children aged between 0-6; to identify the needs and developmental characteristics of children aged between 0-6; to design, implement and evaluate curriculum according to the needs and developmental characteristics of children; to present different approaches in early childhood education; to build positive and effective relationships with children and their families; to cooperate with parents and provide parent education programmes; to cooperate with parents, associations and other professionals in order to solve problems of children Our gradutes work as early childhood teachers and administrators; and run their own early childhood education institutions.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION BACHELOR’S DEGREE PROGRAMME

COURSE SYLLABUS

 

I. SEMESTER

OKÖ101 Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3-0-3)

Major approaches to and basic principles of early childhood education, educational environments, early childhood ecucation in Turkey and other countries, historical development of early childhood education, development of fundamental skills, impact of mass media and early childhood education, teacher education and school/family collaboration.     

OKÖ 103Human Anatomy and Physiology    (3-0-3)

Basic principles of human anatomy and the fundamental mechanisms of human physiology. Structure and the functions of human body, its organization, regulation and maintenance systems, support, movement and integration-control systems, nervous system, hormones.

OKÖ 105Psychology    (2-0-2)

Definition of psychology, historical development of psychology, major areas of  psychology (physiological psychology, developmental psychology, learning, memory and perception, personality and social psychology), psycjological theories, the subjects of biological basis of behaviors.   

TURK 103Turkish I: Written Expression        (2-0-2)

Informs  students about reading comprehension and written expression skills; gives students basic knowledge (forms of expression and thought)about written texts (about  thought-provoking  and instructive texts and fictional/literary texts); informs students about text reading and analyzing techniques; makes practice (prepared and unprepared writing practice) about different kinds of texts to develop their writing skills; shows Turkish spelling rules and  marks with their examples; corrects their structural and linguistic (expression, spelling etc.) errors in written expression; allows students to establish relations between Turkish and world culture and literature.

TAR 101Atatürk`s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution I           (2-0-2)

Concepts; Definitions; Methods and Sources; Industrial Revolution; Collapse of Ottoman Empire (19. Century); First and Second Constitutional Government; Trablusgarb and Balcan Wars; The First World War; Mondros Cease-fire Treaty; Principles of Wilson; Conference of Paris; Arrival of Mustafa Kemal to Samsun and the Situation in Anatolia; Amasya Circular, National Congress; Opening of Turkish Grand National Assembly and Rebellions; Forming of Regular Armies; I. and II. İnönü Wars; Kütahya and Eskişehir Wars; Sakarya War and Major Aggression. Treaties in the War of Independence; Lausanne Treaty; Abolition of Sultanate.

BIL 107Computer  I           (2-2-3)

Information technologies, main aspects about hardware and software, operating systems,word processing applications , spreadsheet applications, presentation applications, using internet in education, the effects of information technologies on social culture and usage of information technologies in education, security of information systems and related ethic concepts.

EFL 101 Foreign Language I       (3-0-3)

Daily, academic, and professional communication skills; such as discussions, debates, and  presentations that are required in their daily, academic and professional lives.

EGT 115Introduction to Education      (3-0-3)
Basic principles of education, relationship and function with other science fields, historical development of education, approaches in 21.century, research methods in education,generel administrative and schooling structure and principles  of Turkish National Education  ,basic roles and responsibilities in education, develop understanding and interest in teaching as a profession

 

II. SEMESTER

OKÖ 102Maternal and Child Health and First Aid     (3-0-3)

Defining mother and child health, factors affecting their health in the community,pregnancy,  growth and development,common diseases in pregnancy, common diseases in childhood: diarrhea, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases such as hepatitis, meningitis and parasites; immunization; common accidents in childhood and preventive care; drug usage, emergencies and special applications; health problems of women in different periods of lifetime, family planning methods.

TURK 104     Turkish  II:Oral Expression          (2-0-2)

The importance of effective speaking , types of oral expression, factors hindering students from effective speaking , methods, techniques, and materials in teaching speaking, and the evaluating methods of speaking .

TAR 102 Atatürk`s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution II          (2-0-2)

Declaration of Republic; Abolition of the Caliphate; Abolition of the Tekkes; Reforms: Dress, Calendar, Alphabet, Political and Justice System reforms, National Economy Policy, The Use of International Number System; International treaties signed by Turkish Republic (up to 1938); Atatürk`s Fundamental Principles: Republicanism, Nationalism. Populism, Etatism, Secularism, Revolutionism.

BIL 108 Computer  II          (2-2-3)

The main concepts about computer based education, theoretical basics and application methods, common formats used in computer based education, evaluation and selection of course software, distance education the basics of  database applications , negative  effects and of computer and internet on children/youngsters  and protection

EFL 102 Foreign Language  II     (3-0-3)

Basic grammar rules needed for basic skills in foreign language, basic competencies in reading, speaking,writing and listening.

EGT 112 Different Approaches in Early Childhood Education      (2-0-2)

Approaches and basic principles in early childhood education ( Reggio Emilio, Montessori, High Scope, Waldorf Schools, Steiner, Bank-Street Approach, Home Based Approach etc.), arrangement of surroundings, materials used in education, parent involment, approaches used  for children with special needs, curriculum, approaches in our country .

EGT 114 Educational Psychology        (3-0-3)
Relation between education and psychology , definition of educational psychology, basic terms of learning and development(physical, psychosocial, cognitive, social , emotional and moral development) factors effecting learning(motivatrion, individual factors, group dynamic), different approaches of learning and their implementations in education, effective learning .

 

III. SEMESTER

OKÖ 201Maternal and Child Nutrition             (2-0-2)

Fundamental concepts and principles of nutrition. Components of nutrients, enrichment of nutrients with respect to nutrient value, nutrition of pregnant and lactating women, malnutrition, energy balance, nutrient requirements during pregnany, malnutrition in children, nutrition of 0-6 year old children and hygienic rules in preparation of food

OKÖ 203 Early Childhood Development  I      (3-0-3)

Cognitive development of children aged between 0-8 , fundamental concepts and theories of cognitive development (Piaget, Vygotsky), fundamental concepts and theories of language development, systems forming language, basic neurological and physiologic  of language, language development of early childhood, factors affecting language development, functions of language and relation between thinking  and language

OKÖ 205 Creativity and Nurturing         (2-2-3)

Definition of creativity and related theories concept of creativity and characteristics of creative people; explain the significance of creativity in children; identify ways to foster creativity in the young child; explore the role of teacher in children`s creative activities; understand how to enhance children`s creativity, through materials, activities, environments etc; conduct creative ideas, activities and products

OKÖ 207 Play in Early Childhood          (2-0-2)

Historical development and theories of play, basic terms used in play, play in early childhood and  developmental stages of play , therepatic ways of play, play in different cultures , play and toys in Turkish culture

EGT 209Educational Sociology  (2-0-2)

Definition of sociology and educational sociology, the process of socialisation, The social functions of education, relation between culture, economy and education, Social chnage, social movement and education,immigration,media,globalization and their effects on education, schools as a social system, relations between school and environment , school and violence

EGT 211 Instructional Principlesand Methods         (3-0-3)

Basic concepts about instruction, principles of learning and teaching, importance and advantages of planning the learning process, on a daily and a course basis, types of programs, learning and teaching strategies, teaching methods and techniques; and the role and use of technology and materials in teaching, planning instructional activities, role and resposibilities of teachers, teacher competencies

OKÖ 202 Early Childhood Development  II     (3-0-3)

Social, emotioanl , personal, moral and sexual development and theories of children aged between 0-8. .

OKÖ 204 Children’s Literature    (2-0-2)

Development of children’s literature in world and Turkey , the importance of qualified books in early childhood, basic characteristic(design, content and educatioanal)  of children’s books.

Examples of appropriate and inappropritate books  , the effects of book in early childhood. 

OKÖ 206 Mathematics in Early Childhood Education     (3-0-3)

Concept development in child, mathematic teaching in early childhood education, prepare mathematic alcove, teacher mission of teaching matic concepts,addition and subtraction activities spatial concept,geometric shapes,measuring activities.

OKÖ 208 Child Mental Health      (3-0-3)

Definitionofmental health, importance, historical development of mental health, theories related to mental health, characteristics of children with and without mental illness, children with behavioral and adaptive problems(stuttering, mutism, enuresis, encopresis, finger suck, nail biting, aggression, jealousy, tics, stubbornness, insomnia, nutritional anomalies, fears, attention deficit and hyperactivity, school phobia, stealing, lying) diagnosis and treatment of behavioral and adaptive problems, special issues in family and their effects for child’ mental health

OKÖ 210 Drama in Early Childhood Education         (2-2-3)

Definition of drama, comparison of different types of drama, history of educational drama, importance of play and drama in the development and education of child, drama techniques, integration of pedagogic drama into daily and weekly plans in the early chilhood education.

EGT 212 Oral History Studies in Child Education (2-0-2)

Historical researches and studies, the importance of oral history in historical studies  , development and resource  of oral history studies,  opinions and ideas about oral history studies , methods used in oral history studies, oral history studies in early childhood, implementation of oral history studies, presentation and evaluation of practical studies.

EGT 214 Instructional Technology and Material Development     (2-2-3)

Concepts related to instructional technologies, characteristics of various instructional technologies, the place and use of technologies in instructional process, determination of needs of class or school, development of teaching materials through instructional technologies (worksheets, design of instructional activity, transparencies, slides, visual tools (VCD, DVD) , computer-based course materials) , examining of courseware, assessment of the qualities of various teaching materials, distance learning and internet, principles of visual design, researches about instructional material development, using of instructional technology in Turkey and the world.

 

V. SEMESTER

OKÖ 300 Physical Education and Game        (2-2-3)

Movement education in early childhood education centers; the characteristics of gymnasium where the programs will be performed; facilities/equipment and their areas; exercises with equipment, programs, games. Exercises that are suitable to 0-6 year old children`s movement development; games that are preparatory to sport games, musical games and practice. The teaching methods of movement education in early childhood. The basic principles in game education and teaching.

OKÖ 301 Music Education I         (1-2-2)

Music and education, using music in early childhood education, discriminating natural voices, becoming familiar with instruments, selection of appropriate materials, developing expression through music, developing desirable behavior via music education, getting children to participate in musical activities, construction of a music center in classroom, repertoire studies

OKÖ 303 Science Education       (2-2-3)

To conceive the influences of science-nature studies on child’s developmental zone and to plan activities which are appropriate for children’s levels. To create environments and situations that will provide students to learn concepts  of science and nature by means of journey- observation,experiment,drama,play.etc.

OKÖ 305 Visual Arts Education(2-2-3)

Definition of art, basic art education , historical development of visual arts, the importance of arts education in contemporary education,to identify and evaluate work of art, effects of visual arts on children, techniques and material used in art,education in museums. 

IST 307 Statistics   (2-0-2)

Fundamental concepts in statistic,levels of measurement, frequency distributions, graphical representations, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, normal distribution, probability and standard scores, correlation, linear regression, statistical inference and hypothesis testing, scale development process, validity and reliability, data analysis with software

EGT 309 Class Management      (2-0-2)

Basic effective classroom management skills and knowledge, communication and interaction in class, the definition of classroom management, differentiation of the concept of classroom management from providing discipline in classroom, interior and exterior factors affecting classroom environment, classroom management models, developing rules and applications in classroom, arranging physical environment of the classroom management of misbehaviors in classroommanagement of time in class,group interactions in classroom, setting up appropriate classroom environment for learning.

EGT 311 Special  Instruction Methods I           (2-2-3)

Aims and goals in early childhood educational curriculum, planning activities, preparing annual, daily and activity plans, evaluating ECE programs, educational environments in ECE classrooms, materials and methods in ECE, parent involvement

EGT 313 School Experience 1    (1-4-3)

Observation of a teacher’s and child’s daily life in school environment, observation of a teacher’s daily plan in implementation.to make careful observation of the center (general characteristics, indoor and outdoor areas, library area, materials); make careful observation of the teacher and activities that take place in the classroom;to make observations of the child’s daily life in school environment  and be able to design and apply activities with children (literature, play, drama, math, science etc.) and to design a portfolio

 

VI. SEMESTER

OKÖ 302 Special Instruction Methods II         (2-2-3)

Educational environments in ECE classrooms, developmentally appropriate instructional methods for children in ECE classrooms(drama, play, music, case study, demostration, excursion-observation, story telling, question and answer method, discussion and Project approach), preparing materials,watching sample demo teaching, micro teaching

OKÖ 304 Music Education II       (2-2-3)

The importance of music in pre-school education,relationship of music and education, musical development of child aged between 0-8 years,introduction of early childhoos  education music program , generating musical repertoire related to early childhood  period, methods of teaching songs ,educational environment and materials used in music in early childhood education.

OKÖ 306 Material Development            (2-2-3)

Design effective educational materials (puppet, puzzle etc) appropriate for children in early childhood education.

ILT 308 Effective Communication         (3-0-3)

Definition of interpersonal communication, communication model, fundamental concepts related to communication, effective listening and feedback , communication barriers,conflicts and managing conflicts, roles of emotions in communication, student-teacher and parent communication   

BIL 310 Research Methods        (2-0-2)

Basic principles of research in social sciences; basic features and differences; qualitative and quantitative research methods;  the stages of scientific research; research models; data collection and analysis methods; report writing; the use of research data

UYG 312 Community Service     (1-2-2) 

The importance of community service applications, identifying the community’s current problems and preparing projects to produce solutions, panel, conference, congress, attending the activities such as symposium as an audience, speaker or organizer, being volunteer at various projects in terms of social responsibility, gaining knowledge and capabilities for applying community service studies to schools

EGT 314 Special Education        (2-0-2)

Definition of special education, basic principles of  special education , factors affecting development, importance of  early diagnosis and treatment, historical development of special education , the general characteristic of  children with mental retardation, hearing loss blindness and low vision, physical disabilities, communication disorders, chronicle disease,  learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder , autism and giftedness, play ’ as a teaching method , parent’s attitudes, emotions and beliefs, Special education in Turkey and TRNC

EGT 316 Assesment and Evaluation   (3-0-3)

Importance of assesment and evaluation in education, concepts of measurement and evaluation,qualification of mesaurment tools, educational tools, conventional tests( written tests, short answered tests, true-false tests etc.),tests used for identifying the student (observation,performance evaluation, research papers etc), results of statistics acording to the results of evaluation, evaluation of the student’s outputs.     

 

VII. SEMESTER

OKÖ 401 Parent Education        (2-0-2)

Social pattern, culture and social development of human, definition, structure and values of family , education programmes, models and projects  for families, programme examples, definition and psychology  of adults,  involvement of families in early childhood education.

OKÖ 403 Research Project  I      (1-2-2)

To prepare a scientific research project in various topics related to early childhood education.

EGT 405 Counseling        (3-0-3)

Purposes of student personality services and their place in education, introduction to guidance services in schools, principles of guidance, diagnosing and guiding students, collection and use of data on student counseling, placement, follow-up advising, research and evaluation, relations with parents and beyond the school community, vocational guidance, identifying students in early childhood education.

EGT 407 Practice Teaching  I     (2-6-5)

To define  the daily tasks which has to be done in the school, prepare  a daily plan, implement the plan , control the undesired behaviours of student, fill the self-evaluation form, prepare a portfolio . 

 

 

 

 

VIII. SEMESTER

OKÖ 402 School Readiness and Transition to Elementary School        (2-0-2)

Definition of school readiness, factors affecting school readiness, dimensions of school readiness and emergent literacy(physical, social, emotional, cognitive, language and self-help skills), designing school readiness and emergent literacy activities, characteristics of primary education curriculum, comparison of ECE and priamary education curriculums, assessing and evaluating school readiness of preschool children.

OKÖ 404 Research Project II      (1-2-2)

 To implement, evaluate , report and present project which is started in Research Project I.

EGT 406 Turkish Educational System and School Management            (2-0-2)

Basic principles and purposes of Turkish education system, legal regulations related to education, structure of Turkish education system, management theories and processes, school organization and management.

EGT 408 Practice Teaching  II    (2-6-5)

To prepare a daily plan for each week , implement the plan, evaluate the implementation (both the teacher from the school and the student), do proofreading of the plan and implement the plan according to the proofreading results and  prepare a portfolio.
